0.8270 resistance area: US Dollar bulls take aim | USD/CHF Price Forecast

  • 0.8250 is the consolidation area for USD/CHF on Monday. The pair retains Friday’s gains.
  • With policy decisions from the Fed and other major central banks approaching, markets remain in wait-and-see mode.
  • A sharp recovery from 0.8190 has reduced the earlier bearish pressure.

0.7250 is the area where USD/CHF is comfortably trading on Monday. The US Dollar (USD) retains Friday’s gains against the Swiss Franc (CHF), leaving the two-week high of 0.7270 within easy reach. With the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision due later in the week, investors are avoiding sizeable USD positions. Markets consequently lack a clear directional bias on Monday.

According to ING analyst Christ Turner, “interest rate spreads have moved a little against the Dollar as the recent US tech wobble has pared back Federal Reserve tightening expectations.” He also notes that “energy prices remain at their highs,” and that “the arrival of a third US aircraft carrier group in the Gulf makes further escalation in the Middle East more likely than not,”. In ING’s assessment, these factors should continue to support the Dollar despite the repricing in interest rate markets.

Technical Analysis: 0.8190 Rebound Relieves Bearish Pressure

Chart Analysis USD/CHF

Following Friday’s sharp rebound from the 0.8190 area, USD/CHF trades at 0.8250 with a modest bullish bias. Momentum indicators remain supportive: the Relative Strength Index (14) sits just above its midline, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) records a slightly positive reading.

The highs of 19 and 20 October around 0.8270 are likely to provide a test for buyers. Beyond that lie the lows of 13 and 14 October near 0.8315, followed by the year-to-date high around 0.8400, reached in mid-October.

During Monday’s Asian session, the 0.8230 area has contained selling attempts, blocking a move towards Friday’s previously mentioned low of 0.8191. A bearish move below that level would shift attention to the 1 September peak at 0.8156.
